Desiree Huerta
Hi, my name is Desiree Huerta and I am a C4-7 spinal cord injury from transverse myelitis that occurred on September 16, 2021.
What started out as shoulder pain then numbness/tingling in my feet, quickly turned into loss of sensation & weakness. Within a couple of hours, I was paralyzed from the chest down. Two days post-admission I was diagnosed with transverse myelitis. After 3 weeks in the hospital & 5 months in rehab, I was discharged.
Be Perfect provided financial assistance which has allowed me to attend The Perfect Step. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about being discharged from outpatient therapy after a certain amount of visits. Within my first month starting at The Perfect Step, I noticed the upper body and core strength. I’ve also learned how to control my spasms better, make more connections with my nervous system & tolerate standing for longer periods. Everyone at The Perfect Step has given me the reassurance that my ability to be independent one day is very possible. I’m currently working towards slide board transfers, strengthening my upper body & ultimately my greatest goal is to be able to walk one day. To all the specialists & aides, thank you for helping me & motivating me to keep working toward my recovery. To The Be Perfect Foundation, thank you isn’t enough! If I didn’t receive your financial help, I would not be able to go in weekly, actively work towards my goals & see my body make progress.
