On January 16, 2025, Mary Navarro’s life took an unexpected and dramatic turn. The day began like many others, with Mary waking up to bright sunshine and attending her regular Pilates class—an activity she enjoyed almost daily. However, after returning home, she suddenly collapsed and was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where she underwent emergency spinal surgery.

Upon regaining consciousness, Mary was confronted with the life-changing reality that she was now in a state of quadriplegia. Doctors discovered that a previously undiagnosed bone spur had bruised her spinal cord following what appeared to be a minor fall. In less than 24 hours, her plans for a simple retirement from 30 years of public education and a life dedicated to serving others, creating art, and cooking large family meals—were abruptly taken from her.

Despite the severity of her injury, multiple doctors have confirmed that Mary has the potential to walk again. Determined to achieve this goal, Mary is facing her new reality with remarkable resilience. She is actively working to strengthen her mind through spiritual guidance and her body through rigorous physical therapy sessions, which she attends five to six days each week. Her aspiration to walk again is not a distant hope; it is supported by medical science and her unwavering commitment to her recovery.

After 35 days of rigorous in-patient therapy, Mary was discharged from Casa Colina. It was at this critical juncture that she was introduced to Perfect Step. Following a tour of the facility and meetings with the dedicated staff, it became evident that Perfect Step would play a pivotal role in her continued recovery.

Nearing 12 weeks at Perfect Step, Mary has made significant strides. The specialized therapy she receives is steadily bringing her closer to her goal of walking again. Every day, she experiences progress that fuels her hope and determination.

However, the financial challenges associated with her recovery have been immense. The scholarship awarded to Mary by Be Perfect has alleviated part of this burden, providing coverage for two full months of essential therapy. This support has given Mary the opportunity to pursue her recovery, with the hope of regaining the simple pleasures of life. It appears that Mary will need to continue this level of therapy for a year or more.
