On January 10, 2023, Gibran Alexander Soria's life changed forever. On a rainy morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., while driving to work less than ten minutes from his home, he was involved in a devastating collision caused by a drunk driver. The accident resulted in a catastrophic C1 spinal cord injury. Tragically, the other driver lost his life in the crash.
In the aftermath of his injury, Gibran was faced with immense physical, emotional, and financial challenges. Despite the severity of his diagnosis, he refused to allow his circumstances to define his future. Through determination, faith, and an unwavering commitment to recovery, he has continued to make meaningful progress toward rebuilding his life.
The Be Perfect Foundation played a vital role in supporting Gibran's recovery journey by providing financial assistance that allowed him to continue attending therapy at The Perfect Step. Access to ongoing therapy has been incredibly important to him, offering both physical benefits and renewed hope for what is possible. The support has also helped ease the financial burden on his family, providing additional time to save for future therapy needs while ensuring he could continue pursuing his rehabilitation goals.
Beyond the financial assistance, Gibran says the experience has changed his perspective on the power of community and compassion. For much of his recovery, support had primarily come through insurance or personal finances. Receiving assistance from the Be Perfect Foundation showed him that there are people who genuinely care and are committed to helping others succeed.
Since his injury, Gibran has achieved several milestones that once seemed impossible. He has progressed beyond extended bedrest, successfully weaned off a breathing ventilator, regained bladder management independence, and is now able to feed himself. Each accomplishment serves as a testament to his perseverance and belief that giving up is never an option.
Looking ahead, Gibran remains focused on continuing his recovery. His goals include improving pain management, addressing a subluxed shoulder, and strengthening his core muscles. He believes that increased core strength will significantly improve his independence and overall quality of life, and he is confident that continued therapy can help him reach those milestones.
Reflecting on the impact of donor support, Gibran shared, "You are simply awesome. Thank you for believing in me. It really means a lot. It fuels my motivation, and I promise I will not let this go to waste. I will make something out of this. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart."
Today, Gibran's story is one of resilience, gratitude, and determination. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that when a community comes together to support individuals living with paralysis, hope becomes stronger, opportunities become greater, and life-changing progress becomes possible.
