Yoli Chacon
Yoli Chacón’s life changed forever in 2018 when she was diagnosed with Syringomyelia, a rare neurological condition in which fluid-filled cysts develop within the spinal cord, disrupting the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid and affecting movement, strength, and sensation. What began as a frightening diagnosis soon became a life-altering journey that would test her resilience, faith, and determination in ways she never imagined.
In 2019, Yoli underwent her first surgery in hopes of relieving the pressure on her spinal cord. Instead, the procedure left her with nerve damage and significant weakness in her right leg, forcing her to relearn the most basic movements with the assistance of a walker. Refusing to let her diagnosis define her future, she returned to her home country of Peru, where she dedicated herself to an intensive rehabilitation program. After eight months of unwavering commitment, countless hours of therapy, and extraordinary perseverance, she regained enough strength to walk again with a cane, a milestone that renewed her hope and reminded her of the power of persistence.
Determined to continue improving, Yoli searched the world for additional treatment opportunities. Her journey led her to Barcelona in 2020 for specialized care before continuing neurological rehabilitation in Cuba. Each experience brought valuable progress and reinforced her belief that recovery is not a destination, but a lifelong commitment.
In 2023, however, her condition took another devastating turn. As her symptoms progressed, she underwent a second surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida. When she awoke, she faced one of the greatest challenges of her life. Her body was profoundly weakened, her right hand had lost significant function, and she could no longer walk, leaving her dependent on a wheelchair and relying on others for many everyday tasks.
Yet even in the face of overwhelming adversity, Yoli never surrendered her faith or her belief that better days were still possible. She returned to Mayo Clinic in 2024 for another surgery before spending an entire year in Peru committed to daily rehabilitation. Every therapy session, every small gain, and every difficult day became another step toward reclaiming her independence.
"Even in my darkest moments, I refused to lose faith and believed there was still a path forward for me."
Through prayer, Yoli asked God to lead her to a place where she could continue healing and rediscover hope. That prayer ultimately brought her to The Perfect Step, where she found not only innovative neurological recovery therapy, but also a community that believed in her potential. Today, she continues working tirelessly toward greater independence while inspiring everyone around her with her courage, positivity, and unwavering spirit.
Yoli is deeply grateful to the Be Perfect Foundation and its founder, Hal Hargrave, for providing hope, opportunity, and access to life-changing recovery. Her journey is a powerful reminder that while life's path may be filled with unimaginable obstacles, faith, perseverance, and the support of a compassionate community can transform adversity into purpose and possibility.
