Marley Basurto
On December 14, 2020, while home from college for Christmas break, Marley’s life changed in an instant. At the time, she was attending West Texas A&M University on a full-ride softball scholarship — a testament to her discipline, talent, and drive as a student-athlete. Her future was bright, and she was thriving both academically and athletically.
That evening, she had made simple plans — dinner in Los Angeles with friends. They met up to carpool, unaware that within fifteen minutes their car would crash into a tree at 77 miles per hour. The vehicle was crushed and engulfed in flames. Their driver tragically lost her life on impact. Others survived with severe injuries.
Marley sustained a broken collarbone that punctured her lung, a traumatic brain injury, and most significantly, a C4–C6 spinal cord injury from a broken neck — injuries that left her a quadriplegic.
In the face of unimaginable trauma and loss, Marley has shown extraordinary resilience. Her journey has not been defined solely by what was taken from her that night, but by the strength she has built since.
Through her work with Perfect Step, Marley has gained physical strength and achieved levels of independence she once thought were impossible. Beyond the physical progress, the program has helped her embrace and accept this new version of herself. It has reminded her that her life is not over — it is evolving.
Today, Marley can independently propel herself in her wheelchair and, recently, she accomplished something many might overlook but that represents enormous progress: she rolled over on her own for the first time. She continues to push forward, working toward one of her biggest goals — learning to transfer herself independently. She also enjoys painting and applying makeup, which is a feat with zero hand function.
Marley’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and hope. She represents the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact that support, rehabilitation, and community can have on someone rebuilding their life.
